Egg: This egg may have been overlooked in the past, due to its close resemblance to HIIA3 and HIIA3A, and small oil globule which might be overlooked in the well- incubated egg because it tucks in tightly against the developing larva (Plate A, arrowed). The oil globule is clear to light amber. White chromatophores cover the larva later, and are evenly scattered over the yolk.
Larva: The early larva has not been recorded, but the 3 and 4 day larvae have a distinctly scorpaenid look about them (B & C) B: 3 days, C: 4 days, (22°C).
This egg has only been seen 3 times, one egg in July 2005, 1 in June 2008 and 20 in an offshore sample collected on 9 June 2009. Eleven larvae have been barcoded (two under the HIIA3 code), matching 1 locally collected adult (BOLD).
